Negative emotions can also serve to motivate action (e.g. anger causes people to confront the person who has made them angry).The cognitive models of emotions focus on the content of thoughts. The cognitive psychology movement has shifted thinking from contents to processes. For example, it is important to distinguish between thoughts that are conscious and those that are not, as these two types of thinking are processed differently. Conscious thought is often what patients report immediately after a stressful or traumatic event because self-conscious thought is always available to us.
